Dentists don’t work alone. Well, if they absolutely had to, they possibly could do some procedures unassisted; however, that really isn’t even a consideration much of the time. This is because dental offices employ dental assistants.

Dental assistants are the people who help the dentist prepare the patients for procedures. State guidelines vary as far as what, exactly; dental assistants are permitted to do. However, most are allowed to take a patient’s blood pressure and dental history. Most can also take and develop dental x-rays so that when the dentist is ready for the patient all he needs to do is come in and look at the x-rays. Many people in dental assisting positions are also responsible for patient education, such as telling patients about follow-up care instructions.

Qualified and committed dental assistants are essential to any dental office. Therefore, it is important for any dentist to find dental assisting before opening up an office. Established dental offices must also find dental assisting to replace any assistants who leave their positions as well. Dentist offices simply need to do this in order to run smoothly.

To find dental assisting, either the dentist or the dental office manager must do some searching. This doesn’t have to be an arduous process, however. In many cases, applicants may actually come to the office. Whoever is going to be doing the hiring must be thorough about checking the background and qualifications of each and every dental assistant who is being considered for the position.

Dental assisting is a serious field; therefore, people who are being considered for the position must have certain qualifications. First and foremost, they must be certified. People take dental assisting classes at one of the programs across the country that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Then they can take a test called the Dental Assisting National Board’s (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination. This test shows that the person is knowledgeable and competent in assisting in dental care.

It is wise for the dentist or dental office manager to check with the state qualifications board to see what, exactly, is required for dental assistants in their state. Some states require that dental assistants be registered as well as certified, for example.

Whoever needs to find dental assisting for a dentist office needs to also meet with each applicant? Dental assistants need to be personable and friendly, as a big part of their job is interacting with patients and helping them. Since many patients are often nervous or anxious—or even fearful—dental assistants need to be able to deal with that.

To find dental assisting, the person in charge of hiring can contact the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) for information on locating possible candidates for hire.

To find a dentist who may be hiring, a dental assistant can try using the Find a Dentist search tool. Type in a location and choose a type of dental office (cosmetic, pediatric, etc.). A listing of dentists in the area will come up, and the dental assistant can check with those dental offices to see if any of those are trying to find dental assisting.
