Emergency dentistry is becoming a fast-growing field these days. More and more dental offices are choosing to specialize in emergency dentistry. This is probably because more money can be made through offices of this type—after all; patients pay more for procedures when they are in a rush to have them done.

The field of emergency dentistry is growing so quickly because more and more patients are requiring emergency procedures. This is mainly due to two reasons.

First of all, many people these days do not have dental insurance. A great number of employers are not providing insurance to their employees; therefore, countless people across the country are without both medical and dental insurance. Although people can purchase their own insurance, a lot of people cannot afford to do so. So, millions of people do not have dental insurance.

Because of this, millions of people fail to go to regular dental checkups and cleanings. Without regular checkups and cleanings, plaque and tartar begin to build up. People get more susceptible to gum disease and other problems with the mouth. This causes people to have more dental issues—and, many of these end up being ones which need to be treated with emergency dentistry.

The second reason why emergency dentistry is on the rise is fear of the dentist. Numerous people are apprehensive of going to the dentist, either due to anxiety about the possible pain that could come as a result of a dental visit or due to worry about what the dentist may think about the condition of the person’s teeth—or due to some other worry, real or imagined. In fact, according to a recent study published by MSNBC, at least 49% of people find the idea of going to the dentist either panic-inducing or terrifying.

If a person has a phobia about going to the dentist, he will not go, even for routine cleanings or checkups. As is the case for people without dental insurance, people like this will soon find that they have more dental issues. Many of these can be ones that need to be treated with emergency dentistry.

Many dentists are entering the field of emergency dentistry because they know that the number of people who will need this type of treatment will likely continue to rise. It will continue to rise because it isn’t very probable that more employers will begin offering dental insurance to their employees—nor is it likely that more people will begin to purchase dental insurance on their own…at least not in significant numbers, anyway. Also, there will always be people who dread going to the dentist. As long as those people exist, there will be people who let the condition of their teeth decline to the point of needing emergency dentistry.

Emergency dentistry is good to have available, however. It can come in handy for anyone, not just the type of people mentioned above. Without emergency dentistry, there are a lot of people who would have had to remain in pain for several days, waiting to see their regular dentist.
