When it becomes necessary to receive dental fillings, it is important that you understand that there are different options available that you can choose between depending upon the circumstances dictating the need for fillings. Not all fillings can be filled in the same way, and so not all materials will work in all situations. You and your dentist will need to carefully discuss all of the options so that you can make an informed decision on the types of dental fillings you want to be used. If you desire a type of dental filling that cannot be used for a certain reason, it is important that your dentist help you to understand that reason.
The most commonly used type of dental filling is amalgam. Although it is used less today than in previous years, it is still the most inexpensive and fastest way to fill fillings. Because of its silver appearance, it can make dental patients feel self-conscious, and so today it is only commonly used to fill cavities in back teeth where the filling cannot be easily seen by others. Some dentists have concern about using metal fillings like amalgam fillings because of safety concerns and concerns that amalgam fillings may not continue to conform to the shape of the cavity space over time. Your dentist will discuss any of those concerns with you when amalgam fillings are being considered.
Composite fillings are the preferred choice for many dentists for nearly any cavity space that needs to be filled. Composite fillings can be perfectly molded to any shape and size required and can be colored to perfectly match the surrounding teeth. One downfall of composite fillings is that they typically last only five to seven years and so will need replacing over the span of time.
Porcelain overlays can be used in place of traditional fillings when a cavity space is especially large or when a uniform tooth surface is desired with out any indication that a filling is being used. This method is similar to the practice of cosmetically capping teeth.
Some patients desire an aesthetically pleasing appearance when fillings become necessary and prefer gold or titanium overlays. These types of overlays are extremely strong due to their metallic properties and also provide a unique appearance when used to treat cavities. Insurance plans may not cover this type of overlay even in the instance of cavities because of the expense of the metal used.
