Cosmetic Dentistry FAQ

How do I choose a good Cosmetic Dentist?

Training and experience are generally the two things you should look for.  Not all dentists and dental professionals are trained in the same areas.  There may be several people involved in your particular case.  For example, part of the procedure may involve a dental hygienist.  Do not hesitate in asking questions to anyone who will be involved in your procedure or treatment.

If they are qualified, does it mean they are “good”?

No.  It is not uncommon at all for Cosmetic dentists to have albums of “before and after” pictures of some of their previous clients.  After all, just because one can write, it does not make them a “writer”.  The same principal applies to the work of a cosmetic dentist.

I have missing teeth.  What should I do?

Most people automatically think “dentures”, although there are other options.  A lot depends on how many missing teeth, and what part of the mouth they are missing from.  In many cases, implants or dental bridges can help.  Sometimes, however, dentures are the only answer.

What is “tooth whitening”?

Professional tooth whitening involves a bleach like solvent applied to your teeth, to remove built up stains and thus, whitening the teeth.  Typically, a protective covering is placed over your gums before the whitening solvent is applied.  The solvent applied is not actually “bleach” and is approved by the ADA.

Why should we have tooth whitening?

Over the years, our teeth become discolored.  This is due, in part, to natural aging, staining from various foods and drinks (such as coffee) and smoking.  Everyone’s teeth will discolor at a variable rate and some teeth discolor more easily than others.  Medications can also affect tooth discoloration.  Once teeth become discolored, it becomes an esteem issue for many people.  We want our bright, healthy smiles back!  In some cases, it can make one appear younger, because their teeth “look” healthier

Is Whitening the only solution?

Not necessarily.  In some cases, the teeth are so discolored, whitening would accomplish very little.  In those cases, a veneer is often used.

What is a veneer?

Veneers are custom-designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material that, when applied over the surface of a tooth, can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing and chips or cracks.

I smoke.  Is that a factor in cosmetic procedures?

It could be.  Smoking is the leading cause of tooth loss.  It also causes numerous other problems.  Two procedures you will probably not be eligible for would be implants, and teeth whitening.  Smoking can undo the correction of either procedure, making it null.  If you plan to have either procedure, you will need to quit smoking first.

I want to improve my smile.  What can I do?

There are many options which may be able to improve the look of your smile.  Many think veneers are the only solution, but they are not.  There are crowns, whitening, bonding and inlays, just to name a few.

Are Cosmetic Dental Procedures okay for children?

Because they are still growing, children are normally not good candidates for any type of cosmetic procedure.  That does not mean, however, that there is nothing that can be done in certain cases.  Check with your Dental professional for more information

What about sedation?

There are many options available now, depending on the procedure involved.  Several things will have to be considered before sedation is used.  Your Dental professional will be able to tell you more about them.

Will insurance cover the costs?

As a general rule, insurance companies do not cover cosmetic expenses, dental or otherwise.  However, if there is an underlying cause which may be structural, insurance may pick up all or part of the costs.

I have healthy teeth, but I don’t like the way they look.  What can I do?

Much of that will be determined between you and your dental professional.  He/She will need to know exactly what it is you don’t like about your teeth or smile.  In many cases, there are options available.

My child (or teen) wants better looking teeth.  What can we do?

While cosmetic procedures on structural parts of the mouth is out, there may be some things your dentist can do to help your child or teen feel better about their smile.

Could the Dentist remove too many of my teeth?

While anything “could” happen, it is highly improbable.  Dentists are very conservative about removing teeth, and only do it as a last resort.
