Prisons Offer Dental Care to Inmates
Wednesday April 8, 2009
Many of the inmates in the nation’s prisons have never seen a dentist in their lives. Because of harsh living conditions and various drug addictions, such as meth, which wear away at the enamel of the teeth and tissue of the gums, many are in severe need of medical attention. This is why many of the nation’s prisons are hiring dentists to keep on staff and on call for emergencies.
Because the dentists are paid with tax dollars, they generally do not perform any cosmetic procedures, such as whitening or implants. However, each prisoner gets an annual check-up. Those without teeth are provided with dentures and those who have severe damage or decay are fixed up. This is done because the bacteria created from tooth decay can actually spread through the body and result in severe illness or even death.
Many of these dentists are retired from private practices and work on a strictly “on call” basis, to cover emergencies at the prisons and to perform annual check-ups and cleanings. For more information on this specialized group of dentists, talk to your local dental expert today!
