Parental Stress Increases Chances for Tooth Decay in Children

A recent study performed by Ohio State University shows that children with parents who have increased stress levels actually show higher levels of tooth decay. Those parents who are single, low income or have low education levels were cited as those having the highest stress levels. Their children, for the most part, had so many cavities that they had to receive anesthesia before they could receive dental treatment.

Surprisingly, it was also shown that after the children received treatment, their parents stress levels went down. Because of economic constraints, many were unable to afford proper care and treatment for their children. During the study, all children who needed medical attention were given it. After this occurred, the researchers re-tested the parents’ stress levels and found that they had decreased significantly.
