Minnesota May Allow Dental Therapists to Do Work of Dentists

If a certain piece of legislature passes this week, Minnesota will become the second state, which allows medical professionals, other than dentists, to drill and fill cavities and perform other dental procedures. This bill would create the equivalent of nurse practitioners for the dental field, who would be allowed to do many of the things that dentists do.

The reason for creating these positions is to fill gaps in Minnesota’s dental coverage. There are few dentists in the state, and even fewer in rural communities. Dental therapists would be allowed to operate in small clinics, or even doctor offices or hospitals, to treat low income or isolated families.

However, many dentists are upset, because they feel that it is dangerous to trust someone without a medical degree in such procedures as an extraction. They feel that this is unnecessarily risky.
