Mexico Attracts Patients with Dental Tourism

The Chicago Tribune recently reported that dental care south of the border can cost up to 70 percent less than the same treatments and procedures in the United States. With many Americans losing their jobs and their dental insurance plans, more and more are considering the possibilities of pursuing healthcare in other countries.

Thousands of Americans are heading for Mexico to get treated for dental concerns. However, dentists in the United States warn that patients need to exercise great care when they travel to Mexico for dental care. Many of the high costs in America come because dentists have to charge extra for malpractice insurance. This is in place so that patients have something to fall back on if their dentist makes a mistake. The insurance covers the cost of any legal fees and pays for the pain and suffering that the patient must endure.

Because most Mexican dentists do not have this insurance, they can charge lower fees. However, the patients are at a greater risk if something goes wrong during their oral check-up or surgery. For this reason, the ADA recommends that patients first check with their American dentists before heading across the border for dental care.
