Dentists Discuss Sedation Techniques, Tips this Week
This week marks the anniversary of the first use of sedation in a dental procedure. Dentists from all over the country have chosen to celebrate this momentous decision, by organizing the first annual Sedation Dentistry Safety Week.
Nearly 10,000 specially trained dentists and their staffs will look over their equipment and analyze their procedures this week, to ensure that they are up to date on the latest technologies, and are providing the safest environment for their patients.
Sedation dentistry became popular because many Americans have an aversion to the dentist. The thought of drills and dental work makes many very anxious. A mild sedative relaxes the patient, and allows the dentist to do what he or she needs to do, without worrying about disturbing the patient.
Sedation, however, does come with its own set of risks. Dental and medical personnel have to be specially trained, so that they know how much of the sedative a person can reasonably handle. This week will be a chance to review that knowledge and test the awareness of dental offices and clinics around the United States.
