Dentist Says that Fluoridation of Water Supply is Pointless

For years, dentists have claimed that putting small amounts of fluoride in the public water supply will make citizens with much healthier teeth. They stated that the fluoride would help keep the spread of plaque down, which can lead to tooth decay and eventually advanced gum disease.

However, one dental professor has done research and found that the amount of fluoride in most oral care products is sufficient. Toothpastes and mouth rinses now all contain enough fluoride to fight oral disease. Also, the professor found that the fluoride in the water can also cause adverse effects, such as nerve damage in infants.

The fluoride concept was first devised to keep the teeth of the less fortunate citizens, who could not afford proper dental care, healthy. However, the professor pointed out that even poor community members can visit their local food banks to pick up toothpaste and rinse with fluoride.

Changing the water supplies in a majority of the world’s civilized countries will take great efforts from researchers and lobbyists. There needs to be more work done on the adverse effects of too much fluoride and how it may do more harm than good. To learn more about fluoride, contact your dentist today.
