Parents Should Help Children Care for Baby Teeth

Good oral care starts even before a patient’s first tooth pops out. Parents should make sure that their children learn healthy habits early. Infants’ gums should be brushed every day and toddlers should be instructed in how to care for their teeth.

Brushing twice a day and flossing can be a hassle, but it will bring great results. Children will have to spend less time in the dentist’s chair, and will learn habits that will stick with them for life.

It is important that parents not regard the baby teeth as a “practice” set. Cavities in the baby teeth can cause speech impediments, crooked permanent teeth and pain and improper development of the jawbone and muscles.

It is also important for parents to take their children for their first dentist visit before the child even gets his or her first tooth. This will allow dentists to take the first set of X-rays and advise you on how to properly care for and teach your children about their teeth.
