ADA Gives Recommendations for Visiting Dentists in Mexico

This year, thousands of Americans will flock to the shores of Cabo, Cancun, and Cozumel to welcome in the spring months with drinking and revelry. Unfortunately, even on tropical getaways, it is still possible to get hurt. Tourists who chip a tooth, or snap a wire on their braces may find themselves wondering what to do. They might ask themselves: Do I want to cut my vacation short and head back to the United States? Should I try to see a dentist here in Mexico?

The American Dental Association has said that it is much better for a patient to have a dental problem fixed immediately. Waiting until the end of a vacation or attempting to fly back into the states immediately can cause more damage than the original problem- not to mention the cost of changing a plane ticket.

  • ADA dentists say that American tourists can trust the dentists south of the border, but just as in the United States, patients have to do their research. The ADA offers the following tips for finding a good dentist in Mexico:
  • Pay A Visit- See if anyone on staff speaks English and interview the dentist. Make sure that his or her practice is clean.
  • Check Credentials- If possible, find out where the dentist went to school. Make sure that he or she is certified by the Mexican Dental Association.
  • Don’t be Cheap- The cheapest dentist is not necessarily the best dentist.
  • Talk to Other Tourists- Maybe another American has had a positive or negative experience with a particular dentist. Ask around!
