ADA Develops Pamphlet to Help Patient Understand Osteoporosis Medications and Dentistry
The American Dental Association has created a brochure that will help its dental patients better understand the relationship between their dental health and osteoporosis medications. Many patients panicked when they heard the news that the medications could cause osteonecrosis- a breakdown of the jawbone.
However, the ADA felt that too many rumors about this connection were flying, so their publication will address the facts and fictions about osteonecrosis and its relation to the biphosphates found in most osteoporosis medications.
The literature strongly urges all patients who use the medications to speak to their dentists about them, but to not stop taking them. They maintain that the benefits of the osteoporosis drugs far outweigh the risks involved with osteonecrosis, which can be taken care of with reconstructive jaw surgery.
The pamphlets will be available in dentist offices around the country. For more information about osteonecrosis, talk to your local practitioner today!
