The Dreaded Root Canal

Tuesday March 31, 2009

This week, the American Association of Endodontists is celebrating “Root Canal Awareness Week.” They are promoting the work that they do, fielding any questions that potential patients might have and trying to calm everyone’s fears about the dreaded root canal. According to a study by the group, more people are afraid of a root canal than they are of public speaking or even of flying in an airplane during a storm.

Endodontists are trying to get to the root of this problem. Most people who are afraid of a root canal procedure claim that they are afraid because they heard of someone else’s negative experience. However, in surveys, researchers found that most men and women who had a root canal had a relatively positive experience and gave positive feedback. So what is it, then, that makes people so afraid of the dreaded root canal?

Whatever the cause for the fear may be, endodontists want their patients to know that they are experts. Just as there are heart specialists and ear, nose and throat specialists, endodontists are specialists in the roots of teeth. They see cases every day and are specifically trained in root canal procedures. For more information about these dental professionals, talk to your local dentist today. He or she may be licensed as an endodontist, as well, or may be able to refer you to a local expert.
